Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Houston, TX

Common questions from homeowners in Houston and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often does a dryer vent in Houston actually need clearing?

Once a year covers most households. Houston works against you on this one: dew points sit in the 70s from May through September, and that damp air means your dryer runs longer per load, pushing more lint into the duct. Big families, pet bedding, and towel-heavy laundry push the interval closer to every eight months. If you live alone and run two loads a week, you can stretch past a year without trouble.

What are the warning signs that the duct is plugged up?

The clearest one is a load that used to dry in one cycle now needing two. Feel the dryer cabinet after a run. If it is hot to the touch instead of warm, air is not leaving. Other tells: a damp, musty laundry room, lint collecting on the floor behind the machine, a burnt smell when the drum is turning, and an exterior hood flap that never opens while the dryer runs. Any one of those is worth a look.

Walk me through the job from the moment you arrive.

We find both ends first, the dryer connection and the exterior hood, because on a second-floor landing in a Katy or Cypress two-story those ends can be thirty feet apart. The dryer gets pulled out, the transition hose comes off, and we check it for crushing. Then a rotating brush on a flexible rod goes through the duct with a vacuum pulling at one end so lint lands in the machine, not on your floor. We clear the exterior hood and flap by hand, reconnect everything, and run a cycle to confirm airflow at the outside opening.

How much time should I set aside?

A straightforward ground-floor run in a Oak Forest or Sharpstown slab ranch is usually done inside an hour. Second-floor laundry in a master-planned build runs longer because the duct climbs through a wall and makes two or three turns before it reaches a roof or gable vent. Stacked laundry closets in townhome and mid-rise infill add time too, since the dryer has to come out of a tight bay before anything else happens. Heavy packed lint or a nest means more passes. We tell you on arrival which of those you have.

What makes one cleaning cost more than another?

Length and shape of the run drive it. A short straight shot from a garage-corner dryer through a side wall is the easy end. A long second-floor duct with multiple elbows terminating at a roof vent takes more rod, more passes, and sometimes ladder work on the outside, so it sits at the other end. Crushed or disconnected flexible duct inside a wall cavity, or a nest that has to be removed before brushing can start, adds to it as well. We look at the actual run and tell you where yours falls before we touch anything.

How do I know the duct is the problem and not a worn-out dryer?

Run the dryer, then go outside and hold your hand at the vent hood. Strong warm air means the duct is open and the machine is the suspect. Weak air, or no air at all, points at the duct. Another check: pull the transition hose off the back and run the dryer on low into the room for a minute. If it heats and dries fine disconnected, the appliance is healthy and the blockage is downstream. We will tell you straight if a cleaning will not fix what you are seeing.

Is metal duct better than the flexible kind?

Yes, and it is not close. Smooth rigid metal lets lint travel through and out. Flexible foil and plastic accordion hose has ridges that catch lint at every fold, and it sags and kinks the moment the dryer gets pushed back against the wall. We still find white vinyl hose behind dryers in 1910s-40s bungalows inside the Loop where laundry was added later. If yours is flexible, we clean it, show you what came out, and recommend rigid metal with a short foil-free transition at the machine.

There is a bird or rodent nest in my vent. Can you handle that?

We handle it regularly. A vent hood with a broken or missing flap is an open invitation, and on the flat coastal prairie here birds find side-wall hoods fast in spring. We remove the nest material from the outside end, brush the full run to clear anything packed deeper in, and clean out the droppings and debris that come with it. Then we fit a proper hood with a working damper or a guard, because clearing a nest without closing the opening just means you call again next season.

My duct run seems way too long. Can it be shortened or helped along?

Sometimes, and it depends on the house. Second-floor laundry in 1990s-2020s builds on the Pearland, Sienna, or Lake Houston edges often runs long with several elbows, and each turn costs you airflow the same way added feet do. Where there is a closer exterior wall or gable, rerouting is the better fix because it removes the problem instead of pushing air harder. Where the framing will not allow it, an inline booster fan wired to run with the dryer is the practical option. We look at the attic and wall path and tell you which one applies.

Can you come out today, and how far do you travel?

Same-day slots are usually open, especially if you call in the morning. We work Houston, Texas on the upper Gulf Coast, across Harris County, and we spill into Fort Bend, Brazoria, Galveston, and Montgomery counties. That covers the Heights, Montrose, and Third Ward inside the Loop, the slab ranches in Meyerland and Spring Branch, the 1970s-80s subdivisions, and the newer master-planned neighborhoods out toward Katy and Cypress. Tell us your cross streets when you call and we will give you a window.
