What dryer vents look like in Fresno
Fresno sits unincorporated in Fort Bend County, strung along FM 521 south of Houston. The housing splits two ways. Older rural places and manufactured homes sit on larger parcels. Then came the 2000s-2020s production subdivisions, built across what was farmland.
The new builds share one layout problem. Two-story slab construction puts laundry upstairs or in a mudroom. The duct then runs up and across the attic to a roof cap. Attic flex sags between joists. Lint settles in every low spot. Nobody sees it, because there is no crawlspace and the run is over your head.
The older stock is simpler. Short sidewall runs, or skirted runs underneath manufactured homes. Those short runs clean fast. The failure there is a duct that pulled loose under the floor and started dumping lint into the belly.
Then there is the dirt. Open cropland surrounds the area, and new sections are still being graded. Fine soil dust lands on exterior hoods and mixes with lint into a paste. Flat prairie means almost no wind break, so it keeps coming.
Two things you can check yourself. Watch whether the damper flap actually opens. And look for lint piling on the ground below the hood.

Frequently Asked Questions
My laundry room is upstairs and the vent goes up through the attic to the roof — is that harder to clean?
It takes longer, yes. Most of the newer two-story homes out here on the former farmland sections run the duct from an upstairs or mudroom laundry up through the attic and out a roof cap, so the line is often 20 to 30 feet with a couple of elbows instead of the short straight shot older homes have. We clean those from both ends where we can, brushing from the dryer connection and from the roof cap, because lint tends to pack at the elbows and right under the cap where the air slows down. It's a normal job, just not a ten-minute one.
Why does the outside hood on my house get so dirty between cleanings?
Fresno sits surrounded by open cropland, and the newer sections are still getting dirt work done as they build out. That fine soil dust travels, and with the flat prairie here there's not much to break the wind, so it settles on exterior hoods and gets drawn toward the flapper. Mixed with the damp lint that's already there, it turns into a crust that keeps the flap from closing or opening properly. It's one of the more common things we find on homes along the FM 521 corridor. Worth a look from the outside now and then even between cleanings.
What usually goes wrong with vents around here?
Two patterns, split by how old the house is. On the older rural and manufactured homes with short sidewall or skirted runs, the problem is usually at the termination: a crushed or missing hood, a flapper stuck open with dust and lint, or critters and nesting in a skirted run that's close to the ground. On the 2000s-and-newer production builds, it's the attic run: foil flex that's sagged between joists and collects lint in the low spots, a joint that's pulled loose above the ceiling, or a roof cap screened at the factory that's now matted shut. The loose-joint one matters most, because that's lint and moisture dumping into your attic insulation.
Can you come out the same day?
Sometimes, depending on how the day fills up. Fresno is an easy run for us off FM 521, so if we have a cancellation or an open afternoon slot we can usually work you in. If your dryer is taking two or three cycles to dry one load, or the machine is shutting itself off hot, tell us that when you call. Those move up the list. Otherwise next-day or within a couple of days is typical.
What makes one house cost more than another?
Length and access, mostly. An older home on a larger parcel with a short direct run out the sidewall is at the simpler end. A two-story build with an upstairs laundry, a long attic duct and a roof cap takes more time and means working off the roof, so it lands higher. Add-ons that come up out here are a sun-brittled or dust-clogged exterior hood that needs replacing, or sections of foil flex in the attic that have collapsed and should be swapped for rigid pipe. We'll tell you what we find and what it would take before we do anything beyond the cleaning.
